Mass Market

I’ve torn covers off
but have never seen their bloated
pages lining the highway.

Like book banks
shoved to the side
with my page plow.

Did they take to the air
like butterflies, with
the crinkle of dry pulp
in the resistance?

Or was each a brick, face away from the air
to land in a satisfying thump.

  1. I never though of books as road kill…but I suspect as I go through the “on sale” books at bookstores…it is about as close as an author could get to that feeling…seeing years of work lined up with “How to cook eggplants” or “The true story of ____”….a very thought provoking poem…nicely done!
